Opposition Welcomes Philippines-MILF Peace Accord
Last update: 16/10/2012
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The opposition has welcome the peace agreement signed between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) that will see a lasting peace in the restive southern Philippines after 40 years of conflict.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang described it as a good and positive solution to regional and international peace.
"We hope that all components of the agreement will be implemented in good faith," he told reporters after the opposition meeting at the Parliament building, here Tuesday.
Malaysia brokered the peace talks between the Philippine government and MILF since 2001 until the preliminary peace agreement was reached in Kuala Lumpur during a negotiation from Oct 2 to 7.
This culminated in the signing of the agreement witnessed by Prime Minister Seri Najib Tun Razak and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III at the Malacanang Palace on Sunday.
Abdul Hadi said the opposition also wanted to see a peaceful and just solution to be implemented in Myanmar to resolve the oppression of the Rohingya ethnic minority as well as in the strife-torn southern Thailand.
