KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- There are 64,894 heads of households categorised as hardcore poor who are registered under the e-Kasih system as of Oct 12, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said of the total, 28,978 of them were in urban areas while 35,916 in rural areas.

"Ensuring the well-being of the people is a priority in line with the concept of inclusiveness, the government is deeply concerned about the poor and constantly striving to eradicate poverty.

"There are various programmes and assistance that have been, are being and will be implemented by the Federal and state governments, in particular to ensure that the poverty rate continues to be reduced," she said during the Question-and-Answer session.

She was responding to a question by Datuk Dr Makin @ Marcus Mojigoh (BN-Putatan) on the number of those who are categorised as hardcore poor in rural and urban areas as well as the number of single mothers and disabled people who have received the ministry's assistance.

Azizah said among the measures introduced by her ministry include the Single Mother Skill Incubator Programme (I-KIT), and Women Entrepreneurship Incubator Programme (I-KeuNita), now known as the Development of Women Entrepreneurship Initiatives (DeWI), aimed at providing training to target groups to generate income and improve the quality of life.

She said the ministry also provided assistance to the elderly, disabled and bed-ridden patients and that until August, some 134,789 elderly people have benefitted from the Old Age Assistance Scheme with an allowance of RM300 per month, involving an allocation of more than RM360 million.

On assistance given to people with disabilities, Azizah said it involved Allowance for Disabled Workers, Assistance for the Disabled who are incapable of working and Assistance for Carers of the Bed-Ridden/ Chronically ill.

Up to  August,  78,221 people with disabilities benefited from the Disabled Workers Allowance with an allocation of RM240 million, she said.

"Whereas 56,413 people benefited through the Assistance for the Disabled who are incapable of working with an allocation of RM97 million. For Bed-Ridden/ Chronically ill patients, a total of 24,571 carers benefited from this aid with an allocation of RM68 million," she said.

Azizah said the Social Welfare Department also guided the recipients through the implementation of the 2 Years Exit Programme by encouraging them to be independent through their careers without having to be dependent on subsistence assistance.
