Last update: 12/08/2016

MEXICO, Aug 12 (BERNAMA-NNN-PRENSA LATINA) -- Income from international tourism rose to more than US$10 billion at the end of the first half of the year, which is why the sector remains today the third largest source of income for Mexico.

The revenue from tourism in this period increased by eight percent compared to the same period last year, when it stood at nine US$9319.8 billion.

Tourism revenue is placed just below remittances, which reached more than US$13 billion in the same period.

Data from the Bank of Mexico shows that, from January to June, the arrival of foreign tourists rose to 17 million, 8.6 percent more than the 15.6 million in the first half of 2015.

Maria Teresa Sols, Secretary of Planning and Tourism Policy, said that the Ministry of Tourism is working on strengthening areas that will attract a greater number of international visitors to the country.

The agency is promoting the strengthening of medical, luxury, nature and businesses tourism.

She urged delegates to reinforce the image of Mexico as a destination of high quality for its wide range of services and unique experiences that are very attractive.

One example of what is on offer is Mexican cuisine, which is represented in three of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

The Mexico City, Tulum (Quintana Roo) and Guadalajara (Jalisco), were recognized by international media and specialized travel agencies as important destinations to visit this year.
