Angolan Capital's New Airport Expected To Open Within Two Years
Last update: 20/02/2014
LUANDA, Feb 20 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANGOP) -- The new international airport for the Angolan capital, Luanda, now under construction at Bom Jesus in the municipality of Icolo e Bengo, near here, may open within two years, says the Minister of Construction, Waldemar Pires.
Speaking to journalists during a site visit by President Jose Eduardo dos Santos to the new airport Wednesday, he said given the rate of progress in the construction work, the airport may open, at least partially, within two years.
Work on the airport has been divided into four areas -- flight-related operations, terminal, air traffic control and support facilities.
The North Runway, which will measure 3,800 metres long and 60 metres wide, was completed in 2012 and is capable of catering for take-offs and landings by Boeing 747 jumbo jets while the South Runway, measuring 4,000m long and 75m wide, will be able to cater for the Airbus A-380 double-decker, currently the world's largest passenger jetliner.
