Plan Afoots To Upgrade Pulau Perhentian Postal Service
Last update: 22/07/2013

PULAU PERHENTIAN, July 21 (Bernama) -- A plan is afoot to upgrade the Pulau Perhentian postal service which grounded to a halt four months ago after its postal agent was left with no workers.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari, who visited the island Sunday, promised to revive the mini post office soonest and improve its services for the benefit of about 2,000 residents.

He said as letters addressed to residents were left openly in two trays at a shop here, they could be stolen or would not reach the recipients quickly.

Jailani said postal agent Mohd A. Hamid was not responsible in sending the letters to the recipients.

"As some houses are unnumbered, delivering the letters to their doorsteps is an arduous task," he told reporters after breaking his fast with Pulau Perhentian residents in the 'Know Thy Neighbours' programme organised by the Information Department here today.

He said to overcome the problem, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would number about 200 houses on the island with the assistance of the village development and security committee.

Apart from reactivating the mini post office soonest, Jailani said Pos Malaysia Bhd would likely create a postal community in Pulau Perhentian to enable the delivery of letters to be implemented soonest.

Meanwhile, Terengganu Pos Malaysia sales and service manager Khairul Nizam Che Nik said the mini post office, which was set up in 2008, used to cater for payments to various agencies, and money order and stamp sales until it was left without workers.

Meanwhile, Mohd said he used to personally despatch letters marked 'Urusan Seri Paduka Baginda' and a letter containing a RM8,000 cheque to its recipients, fearing that they could be lost and late in delivery.

"I also used to take a boat ride to Kuala Besut to send letters from residents to the post office there and take letters meant for residents on the island," he added.

Earlier, Jailani visited the homes of the elderly, single mothers, people with disabilities and sick residents, and presented Ramadan aid to them.
