USIM Edible Garden: Reaching Out To Campus Residents, Community

NILAI, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- In the effort to promote the benefits of homegrown kitchen crops and its impact on the preservation of nature, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), through the Landscape Unit of the Department of Development and Facility Management, has set up an 'Edible Garden' area in its campus.
USIM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Musa Ahmad said USIM's 'Edible Garden' was an awareness campaign to campus residents, urging them to also set up their own 'Edible Garden' in their homes and fill it with kitchen crops such as lemongrass, tumeric, pepper and mustard leaf (sawi).
"By cultivating kitchen crops we can reduce grocery expenditure while saving time and most importantly, the nutrients are higher and it is more hygienic.
"The USIM Edible Garden uses recycled items such as clothes, old tyres and bottles as plant containers. This initiative also promotes the preservation of nature,"he said when launching the garden here today.
Also present were USIM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Datuk Dr Zulkiple Abd Ghani, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Datuk Dr Roshada Hashim, Development Director at the Department of Development and Facilities Management Ir Daim Saian and landscape architect officer Mohd Farid Zakaria.
He said, in line with USIM aspiration to become a 'barakah' (blessed) campus, the 'Edible Garden' concept had succeeded in its efforts and would be spread to housing communities in the effort to promote a healthy lifestyle and sustainable environment.
Currently, apart from vegetables, local salads (ulam-ulaman) and herbal trees, fruit trees were also cultivated and animals such as free-range chicken (ayam kampung), ducks and tilapia fish were also reared on a small-scale there.
During a visit to the garden, Dr Musa took the opportunity to plant a honey jackfruit tree while observing the indoor decorative plant seeds that were also sown there.
