400 Underprivileged Pupils In Sandakan Receive School Aid From TNB
Last update: 06/01/2018

SANDAKAN, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Some 400 pupils from underprivileged families in the district have received school aid including uniforms, shoes and school bags from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) under its 'Back to School' programme.

The donation was handed over by Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman at a ceremony in Kampung Sungai Obar near here today.

TNB chief financial officer Datuk Fazlur Rahman Zainuddin said the programme was part of the company's initiative under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) to help ease the financial burden of parents.

He said TNB was well aware of the financial constraints faced by lesser fortunate parents, especially those with many children.

This year alone, the programme which was initiated in 2013, benefited 13,000 recipients from 50 constituencies nationwide including Sabah and Sarawak, he told Bernama here.

Fazlur Rahman said of the number, 1,400 recipients were from Sabah, involving a total value of RM280,000.

Earlier, Musa in his speech said the contribution by Government-Linked Companies (GLCs), be they from federal or state governments, in assisting the development of education was highly appreciated.

He urged more GLCs to conduct CSR programmes to help the needy.

Meanwhile, Marlaini Majintang, 37, described the assistance as meaningful as it enabled her children to wear new uniforms, shoes and own bags.

"Prior to this, I would just wait for my relatives to give items such as bags, uniforms and shoes every new school year," said the mother of three recipients aged seven, nine and 10, who attend school at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tinusa Jaya here.
